Patagonia Sardines in Tomato Sauce are a wonderfully useful pantry staple: carefully prepared sardines, packed in a vibrant tomato sauce that adds brightness, depth and a gentle savoury sweetness. This is not simply a tin to keep for emergencies, although it will certainly rescue a quick lunch. It is a beautifully balanced product for anyone who enjoys seafood with real flavour and wants something that can be served almost instantly, with very little preparation required. The tomato sauce is sufficiently generous to be part of the meal, rather than merely a background element: it has enough acidity to cut through the richness of the sardines and enough sweetness to make the tin feel rounded and approachable.
For the simplest serving, tip the contents over a thick slice of grilled sourdough rubbed with garlic. Finish with chopped parsley, lemon zest, a few capers or thin slices of red onion. The sauce soaks into the bread beautifully, while the sardines remain the star of the plate.
They are equally good as the basis for a fast pasta.
